Two Outdoor Summer Shakespeare Productions Open This Week

Flock Theatre's Cymbeline
In the tradition of the King's Men, Shakespeare's troupe of 13 players, Flock Theater will perform Cymbeline with an ensemble of actors who play multiple roles. The production is directed by Derron Wood and performance dates are: July 16 – 20 and 23 – 27 at the Connecticut College Arboretum.  Admission is $15/adult and $10/children.

One of Shakespeare's late plays, the story concerns Imogen, the daughter of the British king Cymbeline, who defies her father and marries the lowborn gentleman Posthumus instead of her oafish stepbrother, the son of Cymbeline's new Queen, a villainous woman who has made the king her puppet. The King banishes Posthumus, and chaos ensues as the lovers try to reunite. Cymbeline goes to war against the Romans, and the battle that follows reveals deceptions and reunites a royal family. A new production for Flock, Cymbeline has been called a tragical-comical-historical-pastoral-political romance with a cross-dressing heroine, a doubting husband, a sly villain, and long-lost siblings who help to save the day.

Flock Theater is a non-profit organization based in New London, CT specializing in classical theatre, puppetry, and education. It has operated for 22 years in New London, CT and has performed the longest uninterrupted outdoor Shakespeare festival in Connecticut for 21 years.

The Bikinis - Summer Fun!

There is no doubt that summer has finally arrived in Connecticut.  But in case you had any doubts it is time to head down to Long Wharf Theatre in New Haven for some unforgettable summer fun.  Opening this week is The Bikinis, a dancing in the aisles story of 4 ‘Jersey Girls’ who return to the limelight after a long hiatus.

In front of a live audience, The Bikinis relive their heyday and beyond, beginning the summer of 1964, the night these four inseparable girls got their name, winning the Belmar Beach Talent Contest, wearing their bikinis! The boardwalk was smitten with the 4 teens... Jodi and Annie, two sisters from Passaic New Jersey; Karla, their slightly manipulative first cousin from Philly; and best friend Barbara, from Staten Island. They are bringing back the sun, fun and all the great songs they sang down on the boardwalk at the Jersey Shore... all to raise money for the good folks at Sandy Shores Mobile Home Beach Resort.

The Bikinis thought they’d long since hung up their two-pieces to dry, but this charity benefit brings them out of retirement for one last performance. True Jersey girls at heart, the buoyant quartet lights up their hometown boardwalk with bouncy, summery tunes such as “It’s In His Kiss,” “Yellow Polka Dot Bikini,” “Heat Wave,” “Under The Boardwalk,” “These Boots Are Made For Walkin’,” and “It’s Raining Men.”  Created and Written by Ray Roderick and James Hindman with Music Arrangements by Joseph Baker and Additional Music and Lyrics by Joseph Baker and Ray Roderick this show will have you dancing in the aisles and out to your cars.

The show runs July 9  - 27.  So grab your beach blanket and head to Long Wharf for some summer fun!  For tickets and information visit Long Wharf Theatre.

Chestnut Hill Concerts Season Opener Brings Brahms’s Great Piano Quintet to The Kate

Chestnut Hill Concerts will welcome five extraordinary artists to the stage of the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center for its 2014 season opener on Friday, August 1 at 8 p.m. The program includes chamber music by Mozart and Shostakovich, and concludes with the monumental Piano Quintet in F minor by Johannes Brahms. Three of the five performers –– violinists Jessica Lee and Jesse Mills along with violist Mark Holloway –– will make their Chestnut Hill Concerts (CHC) debut. Returning artists are the renowned Japanese pianist Rieko Aizawa and CHC Artistic Director and cellist, Ronald Thomas.

The F minor Piano Quintet, the entire second half of the August 1 program, is considered by many to be Brahms’s crowning chamber music achievement. It is a work of powerful lyricism, in which small motivic ideas play key roles in carrying out a grandly conceived formal design. As it was with many of Brahms’s creations, the work had a difficult birth. First conceived as a string quintet and later re-written as a sonata for two pianos, the piece, with its exceptional richness and complexity of his musical ideas, found its ultimate form in its scoring for piano and strings.

In the first half of the program, Jesse Mills will perform Mozart’s delightful Violin Sonata in G major, K. 379, with pianist Rieko Aizawa.  Violinist Jessica Lee will join Aizawa and Ronald Thomas in Shostakovich’s highly emotional Piano Trio in E minor, Op. 67, written in 1944.

Chestnut Hill Concerts, celebrating its forty-fifth season in 2014, has expanded its roster of artists to enable performances of larger works such as the Brahms Piano Quintet. The second program on August 8, “Three Beethoven Masterpieces,” will include the “Moonlight” Piano Sonata, the “Kreutzer” Violin Sonata, and the “Archduke” Piano Trio; the third concert on August 15 will focus on the instrumental and vocal music of Franz Schubert and Robert Schumann; and the fourth and concluding program on August 22 is themed “Hungarian Flair,” with music by Bartók, Dohnanyi, and Brahms.

The corporate sponsor of the August 1 concert is Guilford Savings Bank, and Essex Savings Bank sponsors CHC’s Kids and Teens Come Free program.

All concerts are Friday nights at 8:00 pm at the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center (The Kate), 300 Main Street in Old Saybrook, Connecticut. Subscriptions to the four concerts are $120 (orchestra) and $100 (balcony). Single tickets are $35 for orchestra seats and $30 for the balcony. Contact The Kate box office at 860-510-0453, or visit www.thekate.org.
